In the ever-evolving world of design, an unexpected material is making waves: cardboard. Yes, the very same material that has long been associated with packaging and disposability is now being reimagined as a luxury staple. Illya Goldman Gubin, an artist-designer based in Berlin, has dedicated himself to exploring the potential of cardboard. His unique creations, a fusion of art and furniture design, challenge our perceptions. "Cardboard is a material I've grown dedicated to," he says. "It's tough and usable, and the element of surprise when people discover its true nature makes it a great conversation starter."
A Historical Context
The journey of cardboard in design is not a new one. Frank Gehry, a Canadian-American architect, experimented with cardboard in the 1960s, creating the iconic Wiggle Chair. Even statement interior pieces, like the R16 lamp by Waarmakers, are now being crafted from cardboard, challenging traditional notions of luxury.

Designer Vadim Kibardin, based in Prague, produces high-end lighting and furniture using layers of flattened cardboard. He emphasizes the sculptural quality of cardboard and its ability to create architectural forms. "Cardboard is a serious material for designing unique objects," he says. "However, its association with packaging and short-term use is a cultural bias we need to overcome."
Functional Appeal and Sustainability
The appeal of cardboard goes beyond its aesthetic potential. It is recyclable, strong (especially when corrugated), lightweight, and flexible. It can be easily cut, folded, printed, scored, or glued. Treated, it offers resistance to water, dirt, and fire, while untreated, it develops an appealing patina. Cardboard is naturally insulating and warm to the touch, and its affordability makes it easily replaceable.
A Counter to Hard Technologies
Ross Lovegrove, the product designer behind Deond, an architecture practice in Dubai, chose cardboard for the Dubai Design Week pavilion in 2024. He sees cardboard as a natural counter to the "hard" technologies that have become ubiquitous. Lovegrove suggests that cardboard could be used for children's toys, window blinds, and even large-scale structures in dry climates. "It's about being more expressive with a material that is affordable and can be engineered with precision," he says.
Changing Perceptions
Stefano Compagno, sales director for the Italian brand Mobili in Cartone, argues that a shift in perception is needed. "Good design is about the stories behind the materials," he says. "Cardboard communicates forward thinking and sustainability."
